She may have been voted the sexiest woman in the world by Esquire magazine, but “Mad Men” star Christina Hendricks says she didn’t always feel pretty or embraced by her peers.

In an interview with the U.K. Mirror, the curvy star says she grew up feeling “ugly, awkward and horrible.”

“My school days were pretty unhappy. I had the worst high school experience ever,” the 36-year-old said. “I went to a very mean school and was bullied like crazy.”

“There was a long corridor with lockers on either side and kids would sit on top of them and spit on you,” she said. “I was like something out of ‘Lord of the Flies.’”

Born in Tennessee and raised in Idaho and Virginia, Hendricks said she began dying her hair to express herself.

“I was a goth kid. I dyed my hair about 42 different colors, shaved it at the back and wore black makeup,” she said.

Hendricks said it wasn’t until moving to New York to model professionally that she began to feel pretty. And even though she was often told to lose weight, she embraced her curves.

“When I was working in Italy, I was having cappuccinos every day. I’d take my clothes off in front of the mirror and be like, ‘Oh, I look like a woman.’”
